Volvo Pod Drive – The Penta IPS with DSOA

The Volvo Pod Drive system, known as the Volvo Penta IPs, is among the best pod drive systems in the entire world. Diesel Services of America provides multiple services for the Volvo Penta IPS. We provide services for brand new installations, as well as evaluations, repairs, and of course rudimentary maintenance and troubleshooting. We also perform Pod Drive Overhauls as well. Today we’ve compiled a list of information about these amazing propulsion systems, and why they are so beneficial to diesel boat owners today. If you’re looking for info on how to get one installed, give us a call using the number at the bottom of the page.

The popularity of Pod Drive propulsion systems, such as the Volvo Penta IPS is always growing, as these systems ar3e highly effective and sought after. The Volvo Penta IPs are what we call a propulsion system, which is a way to provide movement power, or “thrust” to their marine vessels. The Volvo Pod Drive system, the Penta IPs, has many beneficial qualities compared to other more rudimentary propulsion systems. However, first, it helps to first understand exactly what a Pod Drive Propulsion system is, in order to properly understand why so many boats are now being produced or retrofitted with this technology. Boats traditionally used a series of shafts, struts, and rudders in order to generate thrust, and this is different than the Volvo Pod Drive.

The Volvo Penta Integrated Power System (or IPS for short) is the very first pod Drive system ever produced. Volvo began being the manufacture of these systems for use in 2005.  The “Pod” is installed beneath the boat and connects directly to the boat’s diesel engine system. The Pod consists of a transmission, an outdrive, and propellors. Most pod systems are installed in pairs, and unlike a traditional drive system, they can adjust directly to the thrust so no rudders are required for steering purposes. Additionally, pods are designed to cleanly separate from the engine in case of an emergency so there is no hole or gap beneath the boat if the pod must be removed due to damages.

So now that we know what a Pod Drive system is, why would you want to install one? Well, there are several benefits to the traditional drive system. Diesel Services of America Installs and maintains the highest-rated, most well-known Pod Drive system in the industry, the Volvo Penta IPS. This Particular Drive system features two forward-facing pods with individual steering for each. The pods also have twin counter-rotating propellers as well. Compared to traditional drive systems you can expect the following increased results particularly as it pertains to fuel efficiency and overall power:

  • 40% longer cruising range
  • 20% higher top speed
  • 30% reduced fuel consumption
  • 30% less CO2 emissions
  • 50% lower perceived noise
  • More onboard space
